"Golden Rule"
The Golden Rule,
so simple a thing:
to treat others as we wish to be treated.
Or as Jesus commanded,
'love your neighbor as yourself':
an injunction that
even a child can understand.
Yet one as difficult
in actual practice
as the most laborious of physical tasks.
Particularly when,
in our heart of hearts,
we don't even love
ourselves.
The bête noire we see
whenever we look into the mirror
gets reflected back
onto the unsuspecting world.
And the all the suffering
we secretly believe
our birthright to be,
we unleash upon our hapless neighbor
in a desperate cry
for help.

You are right, brother. We do not love others because we do not love ourselves. What could be more obvious? And those of us who do love others, to the best of our ability, are only trying to bail out our boats of the water of love, which if we can't bail it fast enough, will finally sink us forever below its waves... yes, the sea of love, nothing is more wet or more solid or more eternal. We can't give love away fast enough when we have it, and when we don't, we can't stand the sight of it. Sad and mad forever flip-side of bad and glad. Yes, bad, because that's what you will be called if you really do love, and glad, because even one moment of real love makes a lifetime of pain worth it.
